William Creek and Lake Eyre

Today we did a trip out to Williams Creek and Lake Eyre.  We travelled with a wonderful Coober Pedy local, who was just one of those salt of theearth type of men.

The trip all up was about a 470kms round trip ondirt roads . . .

This post is what remains of the Australian overland Telegraph line.  The telegraph line was a 3200km long and connected Port Augusta and Darwin and eventually was connected to London. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and was recognised as one of Australia’s greatest engineering feats of the 19th Century

Kati- Thanda / Lake Eyre

That shimmering in the background is water no a mirage .... lol it was really hard to capture the vastness of this lake. Lake Eyre is the lowest natural point in Australia at about 15 - 20m below sea level.

When the lake is full it has the same salinity levelas the ocean , however as the water evaporates the salinity level gets higher.  We got to walk out onto the fried surface of the lake with our shoes crunching on the dried salt. Our guide explained that the wind blows the water around, and that when he was there last week the water was where we were standing.  It was really interesting, the drive to the lake took us through what could only be called a black moon scape... it was so surreal.

The drive out to lake Ayre had us passing through the largest cattle station in Australia . Anna creek station. Anna Creek station has an area of 23677 kms , which is larger than Israel.

We stopped for lunch at William Creek hotel.  William creek was named in 1859 and was originally a stop on the Ghan railway line. It currently hasa population of about 10 people ...

This was the back area of the hotel the walls are made of the sleepers used for the Ghan.

As we left the hotel we noticed this truck out front loaded with camels on the beginning of a very long journey overseas.

And last but by no means least we seen Lake Cadibarrawirracanna. Lake Cadibarrawirracanna is also a salt lake. It is name means “the stars weredancing” and is officially the second longest place name in Australia. This is a area where the water feeds into the lake.

It was an amazing, interesting and surprisingly exhausting day...

But I loved it , I love seeing all that this great country has and look forward to what’s to come.

à bientôt
