Sculptures, RFDS, and the Palace hotel

This morning we headed out to see the fabulous Broken  Hill sculptures.
Despite the gorgeous blue skies it was absolutely freezing....

Which was a little sad because it was hard to stay and study the carving. Thank goodness for our trusty wind proof Kathmandu jackets.... and my camera soo can study the Images in the warmth of Bridget

The sculptures are located on a hilltop, with fabulous views to the surrounding countryside. they each tell a story. There are 12 sculptures in total. Each of them were stunning, this was one of my favourites and represents a mother and child.  Other sculptures represented the moon goddess and the rainbow serpent.

After the sculptures we headed to the flora and fauna sanctuary.  Unfortunately but not unexpectedly it was very dry, but still incredibly interesting.

The above is a reproduction of an aboriginal shelter. After the 1 1/2 hr wander through the reserve where we encountered a few wallabies and Kangaroos, some lovely native flowers we headed back to town for a visit to the

Royal Flying Doctors Service museum

The tour was really good
it included a museum of equipment including the amazingly  well equiped medicine box, a film showing the amazing job this service does and a trip into the hanger and control room.

The museum is in the process of renovating a variety of planes used over time for visitors to experience.

Last on our list of to do’s today was a visit to theFabulous
Palace hotel

The palace hotel was built originally as a coffee palace, funded by
the temperance movement in 1889.
Unfortunately the coffee palace was not very
profitable and in 1892 it became a licensed hotel

The murals that cover the walls of the Palace  hotel were painted by an indigenous artist,
Gordon Wayne.
The owner of the hotel allowed Wayne to Paint whatever his heart desired,
the only stipulation was
that the images include water to
induce the feeling of an oasis in the Hotel.

For the movie buffs out there,
it is the hotel visited by Felicia , Bernadette and Mitzi on their epic journey
in “Priscilla Queen of the desert”.
I can see why they chose this as
a set in the movie,
it is Just fabulous ...
would have loved to venture further
up those stairs .....

We had a late lunch here, and I have to say the meal was fantastic
and the service wonderful
I would definitely return here for a meal.
Sadly
This was our last day in Broken Hill.
This was not our first visit to this city,
we were here about 11 years ago
with our girls and some wonderful friends.
On our previous visit we visited the
train museum, which was really wonderful.

Tomorrow we head further west leaving NSW
and heading into South Australia

À bientôt
